MX-5 NC 2.5 Swap — every package, every price

Four ways to get the L5-VE into your NC, depending on how much of it you want to do yourself. All four are priced below. We have been doing this swap since it was not a thing anyone in Greece did.

The four packages

You do the work

1 · DIY parts kit

from €1,490

The L5-VE engine plus the parts the swap actually needs, shipped to you. You do the mechanical work. Best value per euro if you have a lift, time, and have read the guide.

Includes the engine. Does not include your labour, fluids, or anything your specific car turns out to need once it is apart — which is why the guide exists.

We do the work — Athens

2 · Turn-key swap

from €2,600

Car in, car out. Engine, installation, calibration issued against your VIN, and dyno verification before you drive away. This is the package most customers take.

Final price depends on the condition of what comes out and what your car needs — clutch, mounts, cooling. Quoted after we see the car, not before.

You are a workshop

3 · Trade / partner

€1,700 · €1,600 at six or more

For workshops installing the swap for their own customers. Trade list is €2,000; partner price is 15% under that. Volume from six units drops it again.

Calibration is issued per VIN, on the finished car, and is not supplied as a transferable file. That is the condition of the trade price, and it is not negotiable — it is what stops the map ending up on twenty cars we never measured.

Engine already in

4 · Calibration only

from €450

You did the swap, or someone else did, and the car runs badly because the stock 2.0 file does not know what a 2.5 is. Remote across Europe, or on our dyno in Athens.

We will ask for a datalog before quoting. If the log shows a mechanical problem, we will tell you that instead of selling you a map.

All prices include Greek VAT. Shipping quoted separately by destination.

The honest comparison point is not the number — it is what is missing from it. A 2.5 dropped into an NC on the stock 2.0 calibration will run, and it will run worse than the engine you removed in part-throttle and cold start. The calibration is not an upsell on this job. It is the job.

What it actually makes — 12 measured swaps

Every row is a car that went on our own dyno, before and after, same machine, same day. Naturally aspirated, no forced induction.

Read that table honestly

The realistic range for a straight 1.8 → 2.5 swap is 183 to 221 hp. The 236 hp car has high-compression work on top of the swap. The 226 hp car started at 175 hp, not 125 — it was already a 2.5. If someone quotes you 240 hp from a bolt-in swap on stock internals, ask which dyno and ask for the before pull.

Torque is the real story and it is the one nobody puts in a headline: 160–178 Nm becomes 225–290 Nm. That is what makes the car feel different in third gear on a road, not the peak number.

If you want more than NA

The 2.5 responds well to boost, and we have measured that too:

These are built cars with supporting hardware, not a swap plus a map. Quoted individually.

1.8 or 2.0 — which one you start from matters

From the 1.8 (L8-DE)

The biggest jump in the table, and the swap we recommend most. A 1.8 NC is not worth remapping — the money goes further here. Expect roughly 125 → 185–221 hp and, more importantly, 160 → 225–271 Nm.

From the 2.0 (LF-VE)

Smaller gain, still meaningful in torque and drivability. If your 2.0 is healthy and you want a bigger step, consider whether forced induction on the 2.0 is the better use of the same money — we will give you a straight answer on that.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an MX-5 NC 2.5 swap cost?

Four routes: DIY parts kit from €1,490, turn-key build at our workshop from €2,600, workshop trade price €1,700 (€1,600 at six or more units), or calibration only from €450 if the engine is already fitted. All prices include Greek VAT; shipping is quoted by destination.

How much power does the 2.5 swap make?

Across twelve swaps we measured on our own dyno, a straight 1.8 to 2.5 swap produced 183 to 221 hp with 225 to 271 Nm. The highest naturally aspirated figure we have measured is 236 hp, and that car had high-compression work beyond the swap itself.

Is this a direct bolt-in swap?

No, and anyone who tells you it is has not done one. Work is required — this is why Racing Beat states on their own product page that theirs is not a direct swap kit. The DIY guide lists what the job actually involves before you buy anything.

Do I need an ECU tune after the swap?

Yes. The factory 2.0 calibration does not know it is now running a 2.5, and the car will drive worse than before in part throttle and cold start. Calibration is included in the turn-key and trade packages and available separately from €450.

Can you ship a 2.5 swap kit to the UK or elsewhere in Europe?

Yes. We ship the DIY kit across Europe and shipping is quoted by destination. If you or your workshop fits it, the calibration can be done remotely from your datalogs.

Can my own workshop fit it?

Yes — that is what the trade package is for, at €1,700, or €1,600 from six units. The calibration is issued per VIN on the finished car and is not supplied as a transferable file.

Will the 2.5 swap pass an MOT or a Greek KTEO?

It depends on your country's rules for engine changes and on whether the change is declared. We will tell you exactly what was changed so you can register it correctly. We will not pretend the swap is undetectable.

How long does it take?

For a turn-key build at our workshop, plan on the car staying with us. The exact duration depends on what condition the donor car and the removed engine are in — we give a timeline after seeing the car, not from a model name.
