1. What is the MX-5 NC 2.5 Swap?
The MX-5 NC 2.5 swap is the replacement of the factory 2.0L LF-VE engine (160hp / 188Nm) with the larger 2.5L L5-VE engine from the Mazda 3, 5, or 6. Both engines belong to Mazda's MZR engine family, which means the 2.5L is a direct bolt-on fitment — same mounting points, same bellhousing pattern, same wiring connectors.
The base swap makes approximately 180hp and 245Nm of torque — and torque is the real story: up roughly 30% over the stock 2.0, with grunt across the whole range rather than a peaky top end. With 45mm headers it climbs to ~190-200hp, and with Stage 2 cams to 220hp — all without forced induction, extra plumbing, or aftermarket management. The engine uses your existing ECU, recalibrated via MazdaEdit for the larger displacement.
This swap has become the single most popular performance upgrade for the MX-5 NC platform across Europe. It delivers the power the NC always deserved while maintaining the simplicity, reliability, and driving purity that makes the MX-5 special.
2. Why the 2.5L L5-VE Engine?
The L5-VE was chosen by the MX-5 community — and by us at DMS — for several critical reasons:
Same engine family (MZR)
The L5-VE shares the same block architecture, bellhousing, and sensor layout as the NC's stock LF-VE. This means no custom adapters, no wiring surgery, and no fabrication.
Massive displacement advantage
Going from 2.0L to 2.5L adds 500cc of displacement. That's 25% more air and fuel per combustion cycle, which translates directly to more torque throughout the entire RPM range.
Proven reliability
The L5-VE has been in production since 2005 across multiple Mazda models (3, 5, 6, CX-7). Millions of units running worldwide. It's not an experimental engine — it's a mass-production powerplant.
Affordable sourcing
L5-VE engines are readily available from Mazda 3 and 6 donors across Europe. Every engine is visually inspected, and prepared to DMS standards before installation.
3. Power Gains: Stock vs Swapped
All figures below are measured on our in-house 2WD dynamometer at DMS Tuned, Artemida, Athens. These are wheel horsepower figures — real, repeatable numbers from real builds.
| Configuration | HP | Torque | Gain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stock 2.0L NC | 160hp | 188Nm | — |
| 2.5L Swap (base / Quick) | 180hp | 245Nm | +30% Nm |
| + 45mm headers | 190-200hp | 250Nm | +25% |
| Stage 2 (cams + headers) | 220hp | 270Nm | +38% |
| Stage 3 (full NA) | 240hp | 280Nm | +50% |
| 2.5L + Turbo | 250-430hp | 300-490Nm | up to +169% |
The base 2.5L swap (180hp / 245Nm) is what most clients choose. It offers the best balance of torque, cost, and reliability. Headers, Stage 2 cams and Stage 3 are for enthusiasts who want to push the NA envelope further.

Want us to build your NC 2.5 swap?
Fitted turn-key from €4,500 at our Athens workshop. 5-7 days, dyno-verified.
6. Installation: Workshop vs DIY
You have two paths to your 2.5L build:
DMS Athens Workshop
Drop off your MX-5 at our Artemida workshop. We source the engine, prepare it, install it, calibrate the ECU on our in-house 2WD dyno, and hand you the keys to a finished, verified build.
- 5-7 day turnaround
- Everything included in price
- Dyno-verified power sheet
- OEM-grade components only
DIY / Local Workshop + Remote Tune
We ship you the engine and components. Your local shop or you handle the mechanical swap. DMS provides the engineering specs list, remote support throughout, and final ECU calibration via DMShub.
- Engine shipped to your door
- DMS specs list for your mechanic
- Remote ECU calibration via DMShub
- Ongoing engineering support
Most European clients (outside Greece) choose the DIY/remote path. Clients from Germany, Italy, and Spain often drive to Athens for the turn-key experience.
7. ECU Calibration & Tuning
The ECU calibration is what transforms a basic engine swap into a refined, powerful build. We use MazdaEdit — the industry-standard tool for Mazda ECU tuning — to recalibrate your stock NC ECU for the 2.5L engine.
Our calibration includes: optimized fuel maps for the larger displacement, revised ignition timing for maximum safe power, VVT cam phasing optimization, idle stability tuning, and speed density conversion for clean idle and throttle response. Every tune is developed and verified on our in-house 2WD dyno with data logging.
For remote clients, we calibrate via our DMShub platform — you connect your laptop to the OBD2 port, we upload the calibration remotely, and verify with data logs. No need to ship your ECU.

8. Reliability & Maintenance
The L5-VE is a production Mazda engine. It requires no special maintenance beyond what your stock NC already needs:
- Oil change: every 8,000-10,000 km (5W-30 or 5W-40)
- Timing chain: no belt to replace — chain-driven, maintenance-free
- Coolant: standard Mazda FL-22 long-life coolant
- Spark plugs: NGK or Denso Iridium, every 30,000 km
- No turbo oil, no intercooler, no boost control — zero extra maintenance
When built to proper specs with OEM-grade components, the 2.5L swap is as reliable as the factory engine it replaces.
9. Legal Considerations in Europe
Engine swap regulations vary across Europe depending on local vehicle authorities.
The Mazda 2.5L L5-VE engine was not originally installed in the MX-5 NC from the factory, therefore the upgrade is technically classified as an engine modification or engine swap.
However, the 2.5L engine belongs to the same Mazda MZR / Duratec engine family used in the MX-5 NC 1.8 and 2.0 engines. Because of this shared architecture, the installation is mechanically compatible and widely accepted within the MX-5 community.
Approval requirements depend on the country and may involve inspection, emissions testing, or registration updates.
DMS provides technical documentation and guidance to help customers complete the approval process where required. Always check with your local vehicle authority before performing any modification.
10. Frequently Asked Questions
Is the MX-5 NC 2.5 swap legal in Europe?
Legality varies by country. In Greece and many EU nations, engine swaps are permitted with proper documentation and emissions compliance. The 2.5L L5-VE meets Euro emissions standards when properly calibrated. We provide all necessary documentation for your local TUV/MOT inspection.
Can I drive my MX-5 to Athens for the swap?
Yes. Many of our European clients drive their MX-5 to our Artemida (Athens) workshop. We complete the turn-key swap in 5-7 days, and you drive home with a fully verified 180-220hp build. Our workshop is just 2km from Athens International Airport (El. Venizelos) — combine your build with a few days on the stunning Athens Riviera coastline. Sun, sea, and your finished build waiting for you when you pick up the keys.
What is the total cost including everything?
A complete fitted turn-key swap at our Athens workshop costs €4,500-€6,000 depending on stage and options. This includes the engine, all hardware, installation, ECU calibration, new clutch, and dyno verification. For DIY builders, the bare engine starts at €1,800 (plus VAT) and a complete DIY kit is from €2,600.
Do I need a standalone ECU?
No. The stock NC ECU is retained and recalibrated via MazdaEdit. No standalone, no piggyback, no extra wiring. This keeps the swap clean and maintains all OBD2 diagnostics. However, for those who want full standalone control, MSLABS have developed a dedicated standalone ECU for the NC platform — available in our webshop.
Can I add a turbo to the 2.5L later?
Yes. The 2.5L block is an excellent turbo base. Many clients start with the NA swap (180-220hp) and add a turbo kit later for 250-430hp. The 2.5L's stronger internals handle moderate boost without forged components.
