Turbocharging the BMW straight-six: M52, M54, measured
The M52 and M54 are among the best candidates for forced induction BMW ever built — iron-block or strong alloy, forgiving geometry, cheap donors. But most "M54 turbo kit" pages sell you a manifold and silence on the part that decides whether the engine lives: the management.

A 2.0-litre M52 — the smallest of the family — at +57% power, measured before and after on our own dyno, daily-drivable. Not a peak-number dyno queen: the calibration was signed off on stable lambda, ignition and boost across repeated pulls.
The point of showing you the 2.0: if the smallest engine of the family does this reliably, the M54B22, B25 and B30 start from a better place — more displacement, more torque before boost, same fundamental architecture.
What an M54 turbo build actually consists of
Any turbo hardware works only as far as the management and fuelling allow. The build splits into three decisions:
1 · Hardware
Turbo sized for your goal — not the biggest that fits. Manifold, downpipe, intercooler, oil feed/return. We spec this per build; a 250hp street car and a 350hp project want different turbines.
2 · Fuelling
Injectors and pump sized with margin, not at their limit. This is where cheap builds die — a lean spike at full load costs pistons.
3 · Management
The decision that matters. Depending on the car and goal: recalibrated factory ECU where feasible, or standalone (MegaSquirt MS3, MaxxECU, ECUMaster) where the factory ECU runs out of authority. Calibrated on our dyno, with knock margin for the fuel you actually run.
We deliberately publish no universal M54 parts list. Compression, engine condition, gearbox, and your power target change the correct answer — anyone selling one kit for every M54 is selling the easy half of the project.

A full build is a four-figure project — anyone quoting it sight-unseen from a model name is guessing with your engine. The €70 baseline session ends with a real number for your car.

Is there a bolt-on turbo kit for the M54B22?
Hardware exists, but no kit solves fuelling and management — and that is what decides whether the engine survives. We build the complete system: hardware sized to your goal, injectors and pump with margin, and calibration on our dyno.
How much power can the M54 take?
We publish only what we measure, and our measured six-cylinder build is the M52B20 at 235hp/300Nm on the smallest engine of the family. Your ceiling depends on compression, engine condition and fuelling — the €70 baseline session gives you a real answer instead of a forum number.
Factory ECU or standalone?
Depends on the car and target. Where the factory ECU has authority we keep it; where it runs out, standalone (MS3, MaxxECU, ECUMaster). Either way it is calibrated here, on the dyno, per your VIN.
Can you calibrate a turbo M54 that someone else built?
Yes — that is the "existing setup" line, from €500 ex VAT. We start with a health check and a baseline; if the log shows a mechanical problem, you get a repair list, not a map on top of a fault.
I'm not in Greece.
Calibration on standalone or flashable platforms can be done remotely from your datalogs, same loop as our MX-5 remote programme. Hardware builds need the car here.
