What is the MX-5 NC 2.5 Swap?
The MX-5 NC 2.5 swap is the most popular naturally-aspirated engine upgrade for the Mazda MX-5 NC (2005-2015). It involves replacing the factory 2.0L MZR engine (LF-VE, 160hp) with the larger 2.5L L5-VE from the Mazda 3, 5, or 6 — a direct bolt-on conversion within the same MZR engine family.
The result: 200hp and 260Nm of torque — a 59% increase in power and 56% increase in torque over stock — with zero turbo lag, OEM-level reliability, and a linear power delivery that transforms the MX-5 driving experience. The 2.5L swap is widely recognized across Europe as the single best value-for-money upgrade for the NC platform.

Why the 2.5L L5-VE?
Direct Bolt-On
Same MZR engine family — identical mounting points, bellhousing pattern, and wiring. No custom fabrication, no cutting, no welding. Factory-level fitment.
Massive Torque Gain
The L5-VE's 2.5L displacement delivers 260Nm vs 167Nm stock — a 56% increase that transforms mid-range response and eliminates the NC's well-known torque deficit.
OEM Reliability
The L5-VE is a production Mazda engine with millions of units worldwide. Proven in the Mazda 3, 5, 6, and CX-7. No experimental builds — just a larger, stronger factory engine.
Tuning Headroom
With a custom ECU calibration via MazdaEdit, the 2.5L produces 200hp NA. Add Stage 2 cams and headers to reach 220-240hp. Or add a turbo later for 350-450hp — the 2.5L block handles it.
At DMS Tuned, we have completed over 200 MX-5 NC 2.5 swaps for clients across Greece and Europe. Every build follows our strict DMS Engineering Standards — genuine Mazda components, new seals and bearings, and final dyno verification on our in-house 2WD dynamometer in Athens. We offer both in-house turn-key installations at our Artemida workshop and engine shipping with remote ECU calibration for DIY builders across Europe.
Whether you're a weekend canyon carver, a track-day enthusiast, or simply want the MX-5 NC to finally have the power it deserves, the 2.5L swap is the answer. No turbo maintenance, no boost threshold, no compromise — just 200hp of naturally-aspirated Mazda engineering, verified on dyno and backed by 200+ successful builds.
Why the MX-5 NC 2.5 Swap is the Best Upgrade
More torque, OEM reliability, zero lag — here's why 200+ owners chose the 2.5L over every other option.
Massive Torque Increase
The stock MX-5 NC 2.0L produces just 167Nm — barely enough to pull out of corners with confidence. The 2.5L L5-VE delivers 260Nm, a 56% increase that completely transforms mid-range response.
This isn't peak-only power like a turbo setup. The torque curve is fat and linear from 3,000 to 7,000rpm — exactly where you use it on road and track. The MX-5 finally pulls like it should.

Reliability vs Turbo Builds
A turbo kit adds complexity: intercooler, piping, oil lines, boost control, and heat management. More parts mean more failure points. The 2.5L swap adds zero extra components — it's a factory Mazda engine in a factory Mazda car.
No boost leaks. No turbo bearing failures. No heat soak. No wastegate issues. The L5-VE has millions of units running worldwide in Mazda 3s, 5s, and 6s. It's proven, bulletproof, and requires nothing beyond standard maintenance.
Daily Drivability
The 2.5L swap makes the MX-5 NC a better daily driver. More low-end torque means less downshifting in traffic. Smoother highway cruising at lower RPM. No turbo lag when merging or overtaking.
It idles the same. It starts the same. It passes emissions the same. The only difference you'll feel is more power everywhere — without any compromise in fuel economy, drivability, or refinement. It's the upgrade Mazda should have built from the factory.
A complete kit, not "some assembly required"
There are four ways to get a 2.5 into an NC. Here is what each one actually costs you.
| Option | Price | What you get | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| DMS Tuned Complete kit · ex works | from €2,600 | Inspected L5-VE, ECU calibration written for your VIN, oil pickup, install guide, remote support | Shipped EU-wide, 3–13 days |
| Racing Beat Europe Engine only | £5,982 | Their own page: "This is NOT a direct swap kit, there is work you need to do" | Shipped |
| eBay UK listing Supply & fit | £2,999 | Used JDM engine fitted. No calibration mentioned. | You drive to the Midlands |
| DIY from a breaker | ~€800–1,400 | Bare engine. No file. Rough running, check-engine light, no dyno. | Your driveway |
The engine is the easy part — there are thousands of L5-VE units in breakers across Europe. The calibration is the part nobody can hand you. A bare 2.5 in an NC without a proper file is a car that runs badly and throws codes.
Exactly what a 2.5 swap needs — genuine Mazda part numbers
The 2.0 and 2.5 MZR share the same architecture, but a clean swap needs specific new hardware. These are the genuine Mazda numbers. Every DMS kit ships with them already in the box — including the calibration, which no parts kit on the market includes.

Keep from your 2.0
Oil sump, oil-filter mount, intake manifold, cam cover, crankshaft pulley, ancillaries (power steering, water pump, alternator, A/C), fuel rail, water outlet, engine mounts, oil-pressure switch, crank position sensor, coil packs, thermostat housing.
Carry over from the 2.5
Injectors and the VVT solenoid with its gasket. Everything else that touches the swap is either kept from your 2.0 or replaced new from the list above.
Delete
The balance shafts. The 2.0 sump can't house them, so they come out and the oil feed is plugged with the delete kit (MST-02-0156). A standard, reliable part of every NC 2.5 swap.
The three things that catch people out
- 1.The 2.5 oil pan doesn't clear the NC subframe. You reuse the MX-5's own 2.0 sump — the 2.5 pan physically won't fit.
- 2.That 2.0 sump isn't big enough for the balance shafts. So they're removed and the oil feed is plugged with the balance-shaft delete kit (MST-02-0156).
- 3.The crankshaft pulley must be transferred from your 2.0. It has a different number of teeth to the 2.5's — the crank sensor reads off it, so the wrong pulley means the car won't run right.
Running a manual? Two extra parts
The donor 2.5 almost always comes out of an automatic. That means the engine has to be re-timed with a timing tool (CT4064), and it needs a pilot bearing (YF09-11-303) to support the input shaft of your manual gearbox — the automatic never had one because it never saw the same shock loads. Miss this and the gearbox input shaft has nothing to run in. Both are in every DMS manual-spec kit.

MX-5 NC 2.5 Swap FAQ
The 2.5L L5-VE swap is a direct bolt-on for all MX-5 NC models (2005-2015). The engine belongs to the same MZR family as the stock 2.0L, making it a factory-level fit without custom fabrication. NB models can also receive the swap with minor additional modifications.
A stock 2.5L L5-VE swap with our ECU calibration produces approximately 200hp and 260Nm — a massive jump from the stock 126hp / 167Nm. With Stage 2 upgrades (cams, headers, intake), we achieve 220-240hp naturally aspirated, all verified on our in-house 2WD dyno.
Absolutely. The L5-VE is a production Mazda engine used in the Mazda 3, 5, and 6. It is inherently reliable with proper installation. Our DMS Engineering Standards ensure every build uses OEM-grade components: genuine Mazda friction washers, new seals, pilot bearings, and a fresh clutch rated for the increased torque.
It depends on your current engine and goals. The Quick Swap (engine + shipping + balance shaft delete) starts at €2,600 for 2.0L owners or €3,030 for 1.8L owners (includes the 2.0 ECU with base map + oil pickup). The Performance Swap with headers + custom tune + MazdaEdit kit is €3,150. The Full Power Build with Stage 2.5 cams (220hp) is €4,000. All prices include EU-wide shipping.
A complete turn-key swap takes 5-7 working days at our Artemida (Athens) workshop. This includes engine preparation, installation, wiring, ECU calibration on our in-house 2WD dyno, and final quality checks. You hand over the keys and pick up a finished, dyno-verified build.
Yes. We offer remote ECU calibration for DIY builders worldwide via our DMShub platform. We provide a detailed DMS Mandatory Specs List to ensure your build meets our engineering standards. Once your engine is installed and verified, we calibrate your ECU remotely using MazdaEdit.
The 2.5L swap delivers linear, naturally-aspirated power with zero turbo lag and OEM reliability — ideal for street and spirited driving. A turbo kit offers higher peak power (350-450hp) but requires more supporting mods, maintenance, and has a different power delivery. Many of our clients start with the 2.5 swap and add a turbo later for ultimate power.
Yes. We ship 2.5L L5-VE engines and complete swap component kits throughout Europe — including EU countries, the UK, Switzerland, and Norway. We also support remote tuning clients worldwide through our DMShub platform, providing engineering support and ECU calibration remotely.
DMS Tuned is the leading MX-5 NC 2.5 swap specialist in Europe, based in Athens, Greece. For local builds, our Artemida workshop offers full turn-key installations with dyno verification. For clients elsewhere in Europe, we ship swap-ready engines and provide remote ECU calibration via DMShub. We have completed builds for clients in Germany, Netherlands, France, UK, Italy, Spain, Austria, and more.
With the 2.5L swap producing 200hp in an MX-5 NC weighing approximately 1,100kg, you get a power-to-weight ratio of about 182hp per tonne — comparable to sports cars costing 3-4x more. With Stage 2 upgrades (220hp), this improves to 200hp per tonne. The lightweight MX-5 platform makes every horsepower count.
