NC Miata · 2.5L L5-VE swap
The NC Miata 2.5 swap, done properly.
Bolt the 2.5-liter L5-VE into your NC Miata for real naturally-aspirated torque — no turbo, no lag. This is the install procedure itself: donor identification, timing and cam alignment, the oil pan and balance-shaft delete, torque figures, and the ECU flash. DIY steps, cost, and reliability. Every number here is a real pull on our own dyno, from 330+ builds.
Power: stock vs swapped
Measured on our in-house DynoRevolt 2WD, DIN 70020, engine power. Not brochure estimates.

Why the 2.5 L5-VE
- Same MZR family as the NC — direct bolt-in, no adapters, no wiring surgery
- Runs on the factory ECU, recalibrated via MazdaEdit
- Big naturally-aspirated torque across the whole range — not a peaky top end
- No boost threshold, no turbo maintenance, stock-like reliability
- A stronger base if you want to add a turbo later
Donor compatibility
- Mazda 3 2.5 (2009–2013)
- Mazda 6 2.5 (2009–2013)
- Mazda 5 2.5
- Ford Fusion 2.5 (shared MZR L5)
- NC Miata only — does NOT fit NA/NB (B-series) or ND (SkyActiv)
The swap, step by step
- 1
Source the L5-VE engine
Find a good 2.5L L5-VE from a Mazda 3, 5 or 6 (2006–2013) or a Ford Fusion 2.5. Check compression (min ~170 psi, even), timing-chain stretch and blow-by. Or skip the hunt — DMS supplies inspected engines with EU-wide shipping.
- 2
Prep the engine
Balance-shaft delete with a proper block-off plate, all new seals (front/rear main, cams), full gasket set, new timing-chain tensioner, water pump and a track thermostat. Skipping prep causes most swap failures.
- 3
Remove the stock 1.8/2.0
Drain fluids, label every connector and photograph the bay, unbolt the exhaust and intake manifold, set the AC compressor aside without opening the system, then lift the engine out.
- 4
Install the 2.5L L5-VE
The L5-VE is a direct bolt-in to the NC — same MZR mounts and bellhousing, no fabrication. Use the NC intake manifold (the donor manifold fouls the bonnet), a new pilot bearing and a clutch rated for the torque.
- 5
Wiring & sensors
The L5-VE uses the same ECU connector and sensor layout as the NC 2.0. Most of it is plug-and-play: MAF, MAP, CKP, CMP, TPS, IAT, ECT and O2 all carry over. VVT owners confirm the exact connector.
- 6
ECU calibration
The stock ECU is recalibrated for the larger displacement via MazdaEdit — fuel, ignition and VVT retuned for the 2.5. DMS does this in-house on the dyno, or remotely from your datalogs anywhere in the world.
- 7
Dyno & break-in
Proper cam break-in, then a full dyno pull to verify the numbers on your fuel. Real before/after on the same dyno — no brochure estimates.

NC Miata 2.5 swap — FAQ
What is the NC Miata 2.5 swap?
Replacing the NC Miata’s factory 1.8 or 2.0 (LF-VE) with the 2.5-liter L5-VE from a Mazda 3, 5, 6 or Ford Fusion. All are Mazda MZR-family engines, so the 2.5 is a direct bolt-in — same mounts, bellhousing and wiring — recalibrated on the stock ECU for the bigger displacement.
How much horsepower does a 2.5 Miata swap make?
Measured on our dyno: a base swap makes about 183 hp / 245 Nm (up ~30% torque over the stock 2.0), ~190–200 hp with 45mm headers, and up to 225 hp / 270 Nm fully built naturally aspirated. Add a turbo and it’s ~380 hp on stock internals, 500+ hp on a built engine.
How much does a Miata 2.5 swap cost?
For DIY builders a bare inspected engine starts around €1,800 and a complete DIY kit from €2,600 (ex VAT), both shipped EU/worldwide. A fitted turn-key swap at our Athens workshop runs €4,500–€6,000 depending on stage, including engine, hardware, install, clutch, calibration and dyno verification.
Does the 2.5 swap fit an NA, NB or ND Miata?
No. The L5-VE 2.5 swap is an NC (MZR-platform) job — same mounts and bellhousing. The NA/NB 1.6/1.8 (B-series) and the ND (SkyActiv) are different engine families and do not take this swap.
Is the 2.5 swap reliable?
Yes, when done right. The L5-VE is a stout MZR engine; the base swap runs on the factory ECU with no forced induction, so it’s effectively stock reliability with more torque. The common failure points are skipped prep — do the balance-shaft delete, seals and timing-chain tensioner.
Can you tune my Miata 2.5 swap remotely?
Yes. Most owners outside Greece do the swap locally and we calibrate it remotely via MazdaEdit from your datalogs, revising until it’s clean. You can also drive or ship the car to our Athens workshop for a fitted turn-key build.
