Can You Tune an NC Miata Without a Dyno?

Yes. You flash a custom MazdaEdit map, log real pulls on the road, and we revise from those logs; 2-3 revisions usually finish the job.

Logs show how the engine is running, but they don't measure power. If you want a verified hp number, you still need a dyno.

What replaces the dyno

A dyno gives the tuner a controlled load and a power reading. A remote tune replaces the load with your own full-throttle pulls and replaces the power reading with engine data. The car never leaves your garage.

Remote doesn't mean starting from zero. Our NC calibrations are developed on our own dyno in Artemida, 500+ cars and 5000+ pulls across the shop. Your logs then fit that work to your car, fuel and hardware.

The workflow

  1. Check the car. Send the ECU part number and spec the engine, intake, MAP sensor, injectors, fuel and limiter.
  2. Set up. Windows laptop only, J2534 OBD cable, MazdaEdit. With the flasher in your hands, setup takes 5 minutes and the first map is written.
  3. Read and back up. Save the stock file and keep it forever. Send us a copy.
  4. Flash. We send a calibration written for your car, the same day. Ignition off for 10 seconds after writing, then start the car.
  5. Log. After purchase we tell you exactly what to log and how to drive it, somewhere legal and safe.
  6. Revise. Send the file. We read it and send the next revision. 2-3 usually finish the job, and revisions are unlimited for the same setup.

Do you need a wideband?

Not on a naturally aspirated NC: the stock ECU already runs a wideband front sensor. On turbo cars and older cars, you do need one.

What logs can't do

  • They don't give you a measured power figure. We don't call a remote car dyno-verified unless it has been on a dyno.
  • They depend on the pull. A log can only show what you drove.
  • They can't fix a mechanical fault. A bad log may point to the car, not the map.

What our dyno numbers do and don't prove

NC setupCarsMedian after tune
1.8 stock hardware3147 hp / 181 Nm
2.0 stock hardware1177 hp / 195 Nm
2.5 swap, cams7219 hp / 270 Nm

These were measured on our own dyno, not on remote cars. Only one car in our numeric data has a post stating it was remote tuned (2.5, cams, 220 hp / 270 Nm), and the post doesn't say where it was measured. They show what the calibration work produces in a controlled test, and they don't predict your car. Full table by setup.

FAQ

Do I need a dyno at all?

Not to get a finished tune. You need one only if you want a measured power figure.

How many revisions does it take?

2-3 usually finish the job, and they're unlimited for the same setup.

How fast is the first map?

The same day.

Which log channels do you use?

That's part of how we work, so it stays with us. After you buy, we tell you exactly what to log.

Can I do it on a Mac?

The workflow is Windows only.

What does it cost?

Outside the EU: $480 naturally aspirated, $650 turbo. EU: €450 + VAT (€558 incl. VAT), or €650 + VAT turbo or supercharged.

Can I go back to stock?

Yes. That's what the backup you saved first is for.

What if a flash fails?

We will support you.
