Those are the figures we work to on this engine. They are a starting point, not a promise: the number we hand back is the one your car makes on our dyno, measured before and after on the same day, in the same conditions.
Where the 73 Nm shows up
On a diesel the useful change is torque, not peak power. Going from 350 Nm to 423 Nm fills in the mid-range, which is where a Volkswagen Golf actually spends its time — pulling from 1,800 to 3,000 rpm in a high gear, overtaking without dropping two gears, towing or carrying weight without the engine falling on its face.
Peak power moves too, 170 hp to 212 hp, but you will feel the 73 Nm far more often than the 42 hp.
