Where the 97 Nm shows up

On a diesel the useful change is torque, not peak power. Going from 300 Nm to 397 Nm fills in the mid-range, which is where a Volkswagen Crafter actually spends its time — pulling from 1,800 to 3,000 rpm in a high gear, overtaking without dropping two gears, towing or carrying weight without the engine falling on its face.

Peak power moves too, 136 hp to 172 hp, but you will feel the 97 Nm far more often than the 36 hp.
