Those are the figures we work to on this engine. They are a starting point, not a promise: the number we hand back is the one your car makes on our dyno, measured before and after on the same day, in the same conditions.

Where the 54 Nm shows up

On a diesel the useful change is torque, not peak power. Going from 400 Nm to 454 Nm fills in the mid-range, which is where a Volkswagen Arteon actually spends its time — pulling from 1,800 to 3,000 rpm in a high gear, overtaking without dropping two gears, towing or carrying weight without the engine falling on its face.

Peak power moves too, 190 hp to 225 hp, but you will feel the 54 Nm far more often than the 35 hp.
