Those are the figures we work to on this engine. They are a starting point, not a promise: the number we hand back is the one your car makes on our dyno, measured before and after on the same day, in the same conditions.

Where the 79 Nm shows up

On a diesel the useful change is torque, not peak power. Going from 305 Nm to 384 Nm fills in the mid-range, which is where an Alfa Romeo 156 actually spends its time — pulling from 1,800 to 3,000 rpm in a high gear, overtaking without dropping two gears, towing or carrying weight without the engine falling on its face.

Peak power moves too, 140 hp to 172 hp, but you will feel the 79 Nm far more often than the 32 hp.
