MX-5 NC Turbo: Everything You Need to Know

The MX-5 NC turbo conversion is the most effective way to extract serious horsepower from Mazda's iconic roadster. The NC platform (2005-2015) shares its MZR engine family with the Mazda 3, 5, and 6 — engines that respond exceptionally well to forced induction. At DMS Tuned, we've developed three distinct turbo packages to match every budget and power target: from a conservative daily-driver setup to a fully forged race build.

Why turbo an MX-5 NC? The stock NC produces 126-170hp depending on engine size — adequate for light driving, but limiting on highway merges, track use, and spirited canyon runs. Adding forced induction transforms the car's character entirely. A Street Turbo kit running 7-10 psi on stock internals delivers 250-320hp — more than double the stock output — with daily-driver reliability and standard maintenance requirements.

All three of our turbo kits — Street, Performance, and Full Build — are compatible with the 1.8L BP, 2.0L LF-VE, and 2.5L L5-VE engines. The 2.5L is the ideal turbo base: its larger displacement produces more torque at lower boost pressures, resulting in a broader powerband and less stress on components. Many of our clients follow the "2.5 swap first, turbo later" upgrade path for the ultimate MX-5 NC build.
